When I started out I wanted to try out every component I could get my hands on and ended up spending 'hundreds of dollars' (LOL: As if that's a lot of money compared to most other hobbies). Thanks! Also, I realize I can buy ready kits online, but they seem a bit expensive for what you get, plus, they include some components like motors or motion sensors that I don't really need right now. I'd just hate to order everything, only to realize I'm missing something vital and have to wait another week for it to arrive. Right now I only plan to do some simple stuff with LEDs or infrared. But besides that, anything I am missing or that you could recommend? I'm not sure if I need shift registers or relays. So far, I've got: breadboard, resistors (kit with various values), LEDs, jumper wires, transistors, external power supply, some spare ATmega328s, capacitors (not sure what types), diodes (possibly?), crystals, buttons, infrared sensors, photodetectors, temperature sensor (perhaps?), hook up wire, potentiometers, some connectors, and possibly an LCD screen. So, I'm looking at buying an Arduino Uno, but am wondering what other type of essential components I should buy along with it.

I've heard a lot of great things about Arduino, and think it's the best way for me to jump into this new world.
